On July 27, 1986, as a result of a cry for help from an area church that had closed its doors, a fledgling mission church was begun in the Tri-Cities area of Henderson County. Affectionately known as the “Chicken Church” due to the flock of chickens from the farm next door that enjoyed the porch and the lawn of the church—the work began.
In October 1986, the mission moved into Bob’s Cafe in Shady Oaks. Now affectionately known as “Bob’s Barbeque Baptist,” the congregation grew and plans were set in place to begin construction on a church building. As the walls were put up, congregants worked night and day to provide insulation, sheetrock, trim and on Sunday, July 17, 1988 over 200 people gathered for the dedication of the new building they could call home. Later, on January 28, 1990, Dogwood Mission constituted as Dogwood Baptist Church and Phil Greenwalt was called as the first pastor on March 11, 1990.
And now, under the care of pastor and teacher, Dave McGee, Dogwood is committed to providing real love, real hope, and real answers by serving the Lord, loving others, and standing firm on biblical truth. We are more than a building during the week. We are more than a Sunday visit and a nice service. We want more. We desire to BE the church. Dogwood Church continues to press forward guarding its unity and believing God to provide the resources to construct and complete any work in which He leads. It is our sincere hope that as we enter into the next phase of growth for Dogwood Church that you would indeed “Share in the Adventure” and become a sacrificial partner in what God is doing here. Join us on Sundays to learn more about how you can join the journey with us.
